Hamvention 2015

Manjurul Haque – S21AM

Dhaka , Bangladesh

It was a longtime dream for me that once I will join Dayton Hamvention in USA, the largest Radio Amateurs gathering & HAM exhibition since 1952. From last one year I have planned to join Hamvention 2015 and had a close correspondence with Gaynell Larsen, Director FAIRS USA. After flying approx. 17000 km finally I reached Dayton Airport around 8.45PM on May 13, 2015. Accommodation for me already arranged by Gaynell in Hotel Red Roof Inn when I reached there it’s almost dark and feel little bit cold.

Next day morning within 8.00AM we had our breakfast than started for exhibition “Hamvention 2015” Almost all Transceiver Company such as Icom, Yaesu, Kenwood, Elecraft, Alinco, Ten-Tech, Hilberling, Antenna Manufacturer  Cushcraft, Dimond, M2, MFJ, Radio Accessories all are there with their products.

It was a great opportunity for me to get ARRL, RSGB, AMSAT, DARA with others ham radio association under one umbrella. I joined ARRL as a new member. The geographical location of S21 is the opposite of the globe of US therefore many HAM had surprise to see me at Dayton they warmly invite me their booth really that was a wonderful environment. ARRL senior official was happy to see me he gave me “The ARRL Hand Book 2015” as a gift items. Any Bangladeshi Radio Amateur can take it from FAIRS Bangladesh Library for read. Thanks ARRL for their good feeling for me.

Then I join AMSAT & RSGB as a new member. The most surprising thing when I saw a AMSAT Satellite on the They asked me to take hand for a picture. How many booth I visited I didn’t count but I am sure I visited all the corner even don’t miss to see the RC helicopter’s booth.

The Special event station was setup inside the Ball Arena by Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) using a crank type self-supporting tower on the top a 3 element HF Yagi, Multiband wire dipole. The special event station equipped with HF, CW and data communication etc.

Amateur Radio Emergency Service Mobile Van was another big attraction for me. As I remember I  visited two van One was SHELBY County Amateur Radio Emergency Van , Inside the van it’s well equipped  with Radio Equipment, operator’s  desk and chair everything nicely organized. Another one was a big Ford vehicle inside wooden decorated with operator’s bed wash room it’s run by a HAM personally sorry I forgot his name. Besides this DARA has communications van with HF Yagi antenna on the top of the telescopic Mast. Besides this most of  HAM’s  vehicles equipped with Screw driver type HF Mobile antenna & more than two three VHF & UHF antenna on the rooftop.

Flea Market was another interesting area especially for those who were looking Vintage Radio, Old Radio gears, Manuals, Connectors etc. Flea market also well-organized enough open space for walking and see all items.

Amateur Radio was ban in Bangladesh until 1991. Since March 1993 FAIRS played a big role to promote Amateur Radio in Bangladesh .I got my license on 12th September 1993 and so far did a lot of QSO around the globe with Yaesu FT757GXII with 3element Cush craft Yagi gifted from David Larsen, FAIRS on 1993.

Again Thanks my FAIRS international friends Helen (UR5WA), Alex (VE3ON) ,Tom (W4VZH) & Mark (KK4TAH) for your nice accompany. Especial thanks to Gaynell (KK4WWW) for her continuous support cooperation and hospitality. I missed Dave because he couldn’t come Dayton this year. Hope see you again. Good Bye Dayton!
