Gaynell Larsen (KK4WWW) gives a great example of the FAIRS purpose of Building Global Friendship in the story about Gloria below.
Update on Gloria Walsh and our FAIRS years with her in Dominica. It’s hard to believe we met Gloria twenty years ago on one of our trips to Dominica, a small island nation in the Caribbean Sea. We met her in 2005 on a trip with Good Shepherd Baptist Church of Christiansburg, Virginia when she was working at the orphanage near Roseau.
Since our meeting she has established a non-profit, Love One Teach One Foundation just outside of Roseau. It was a very poor community and when the children got out of school around 1PM they would have to walk back to the village of Silver Lake. Most of the adults were gone during the day so the children would not have food or anyone to help them, so Gloria was using a school room on their walk back to Silver Lake. There she would fix them some food – usually a sandwich and some juice. After that she would assist them with their homework before they headed home. This was a wonderful help to all the children and at that time FAIRS would supply funds to help make this possible. Over the years Gloria was a real inspiration for the children and her service did not go unnoticed by the folks in Dominica – in 2011 Gloria was honored with an award by the First Caribbean International Bank as “Unsung Hero for 2011”.
From 2005 until now, FAIRS has been working with Gloria and Love One Teach One by regularly shipping clothes, shoes, books, toys, disposable depends for the elderly, medications, hospital supplies, and sponsoring Summer School, Youth Etiquette Dinners and Youth workshops. Gloria works 24/7 for the Children and Families of Dominica and we are so proud and happy to support her Outreach.
Following are a few pictures from some of the projects Gloria has spearheaded over the years and still up to today!
