FAIRS Prepares to Head Back to Dominica

At the end of this month, FAIRS(Foundation for Amateur International Radio Service) founders David (KK4WW) and Gaynell Larsen (KK4WWW) will make their annual trip to Dominica, a small island country in the Eastern Caribbean. This will make more than twenty years FAIRS has traveled to the small island to provide goodwill for those in need.

This August, tropical hurricane Erika devastated the island of Dominica. Many residents have been left without food, supplies, and proper clothing. FAIRS has shipped a wide array of supplies to the people of Dominica including shoes, food, and medical supplies. As always, Amateur Radio will be an important part of the trip. Along with performing routine maintenance, FAIRS members will help to train locals in radio communication procedures and proper use of equipment as well as sustaining Dominica’s communication infrastructure. The goal of this is to establish quality radio communications and to provide those interested with an opportunity to learn more about amateur radio. FAIRS will be leading a relief effort in Silverlake, one of the areas most affected by the natural disaster. This area is in desperate need of aid, and FAIRS has made it a goal to provide help especially to the youth in this region. FAIRS members will leave soon and begin the relief effort, reporting their progress along the way.
